RECESS
The act of remembering is not merely a cognitive impulse: it is as philosophical as it is neurological, and the things that trigger certain memories are wedded as inextricably with emotional remembrances as they are with hard-wired synapses. In journeying back in time to the schools of my adolescence I have unearthed memories of formal education that are infused with both melancholy and promise.
Fifteen years after having left Argentina to live in New York, I returned to find the familiar spaces of my youth unchanged. I walked into a time capsule, and there is indeed a prevailing feeling of suspended animation in the images. The rooms appear to be waiting for something, for students and teachers to inhabit them; I keep them empty so we can bring our own experience to them. We project upon them our personal pasts, no matter where we have lived and learned.
