Artist Statement
Was there ever anything better than childhood games of Pretend? I remember dressing up in my mother's clothes, donning her jewelry, and carefully applying lipstick to my little sister that ended up smudged around the periphery of her mouth.
One of the best things about the Game of Pretend was being in collusion with my sister. Alternate realities unfolded between us, as unfold between all kids in cahoots with each other, and within the confines of our own microcosm of tin foil fairy wings and magic wands, we understood the nature of the universe perfectly.
The images in this series are performative in nature, and are made in the fashion of such childhood collusion. We bring our costumes and props, and we carve out a time and a space where our antics and imaginations can chart their own course. What unfolds during any shoot, is an intuitive sort of exploration that surfaces our wants and anxieties about culturally imposed roles, unequal power relations, and our relationship to passing youth and sexual desirability.
Our topics are varied, and depend upon location and what props we bring. A project shot in my bedroom, for example, evolved into final images that explored the idea of intimacy. Another shoot with aprons and irons turned into frames about domesticity. In all, these images are about the world from a female perspective, and celebrate the inner strength and mischievous imaginations of women as warriors who fight for and against themselves.
