Introduction
The first five images are from Sam's seminal trilogy of creative figure photography books produced in the 60s. 'Five Girls' was a groundbreaking book which liberated nude photography from cliché. Sam's next book 'Cowby Kate and Other Stories' published in 1964, produced two pioneering firsts, narrative in a purely creative photographic book and the use of grain as a conscious image making element in black and white printing. The other key aspects of 'Kate' such as photo-montage, styling and design saw their first iteration in 'Five Girls'. Kate is probably the best selling photo book of all time - total sales including forfeited copies were approximately one million. 'November Girl' (1967) was in many ways the high point of all the ideas explored in Sam's first books. His other book published in the same year, 'African Image' will be featured in a future API series. The cover of 'Haskins Posters' (1972) is probably the most iconic of Sam's post sixties images. 'Haskins Posters', a book designed to be dismantled, was printed on one side only of card strength paper to enable easy pull-out for pin-up or framing of individual book pages. The book was hugely successful in the decade of its launch and like all Sam's books is now a collector's item.
