Artist Statement
Over the past decade, I have worked on five projects which investigate themes related to domesticity. In ‘The Harry Project’, I photographed my wife and newborn son in an attempt to convey the emotional ambiguity associated with the challenges of parenting. In ‘Dwelling’, I examined anonymous people’s ‘stuff’ as a vehicle for creating unconventional portraits. In ‘My Boat is so Small’, I photographed children’s spaces in order to examine societal pressures and parents’ expectations for their children. In ‘Sleepless’, I have been making long-exposure images, audio recordings and videos of people sleeping in order to investigate the role of sleep in our lives and to draw attention to the importance of this often neglected activity. Lastly, in ‘Coming Up Roses’, I have been making portraits, landscapes and still life photographs which investigate the cultural expectations of happiness and success associated with child rearing.
Process Statement
I use a 4x5" view camera, a Flextight scanner and Epson inkjet printers to produce my work.
