Artist Statement
I am a visual anthropologist who focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean. Due to my training and personal preferences, I work on long term photographic essays, my interests are in documenting the lives of economically and socially marginal people; workers and how they cope with changes in the labor market due to new tactics in the capitalist system; the impact of the Latin American response to free trade and neoliberal policies; and people who are vulnerable to natural disaster.
Process Statement
Images are an important part of our perception of the world around us, the “other half” is either not represented or the circumstances that creates their situation are not reveal. I strive for a gaze that helps towards a better understanding of our society, because pictures are a driving force behind our thinking and acting. I believe we have a responsibility with our subject and viewers; therefore, our gaze should be one of conscience, compromise, participation, respect and questioning.
