Artist Statement
Nature is full and rich, complete without my taking pictures of it. And yet… I need to use those aspects of nature I have come to see as raw material to create something new. At the same time, when I am photographing I am also sensing what is less visible, what is felt, beyond our ordinary consciousness. It is so incredibly subtle that I no longer take single photographs, I use my computer to combine images and magnify less obvious aspects of the clouds, streams, rocks and trees I photograph. Maybe what I am trying to see isn’t even visible at all, but it is there. Or it’s created.
Process Statement
Months after the photographs are taken, images start to form in my studio, at the computer. Combining these images seems to happen spontaneously. The original images no longer determine the final picture and layers coalesce organically. I no longer need to believe that I am in charge, I let things come toward me without jumping into the way.
These archival inkjet prints are in editions of eleven. The scale is not fixed, but I often prefer 3 x 4 feet.
