Artist Statement
“My interest lies in humankind and it’s role in society, especially in the space man claims for himself or to which he finds himself exposed to. My objective is to get as close to the point of where I can make myself – for a moment - part of a persons life. With the help of my subjective perception I attempt turning their innermost part outward – accentuating their vulnerability, fear and uncertainty."
Born and lives in Lucerne, Central Switzerland.
Mischa Christen gave up his career as a typographer and went on a 6-year odyssey in the search of his new direction. For two years he mostly worked during the night, among other things as a lacquerer for airplanes and in a post office carrying around bulky cargo. Later he gathered experience as a ventilation fitter and as industrial painter. Following this he worked as a male nurse in the hospital as well as a social worker working with drug addicts. Also he hung up posters all around Switzerland for a long time and collected used clothing and shoes for an NGO as the only Swiss working among migrants.
Gathering all this experience most probably helped in shaping his dedication and interest in social themes.
Besides almost becoming a police cadet and construction painter he cancelled an education in health massage (2001) and fashion design (2002 – 2003) to finally find his passion for photography by coincidence in 2003.
Between 2004 and 2013 workshops with Andri Pol, Paolo Pellegrin, Anders Petersen, Michael Ackerman and Antoine D’Agata.
