Process Statement
Using a flatbed scanner to create images, I stage pigments, inks and objects and then capture the often random and spontaneous interactions that take place in "Liquiscans." Liquiscans invoke both macro photography and abstract painting, where the actions of the medium (such as splatters, drips or uniform fields) play an important role in the result.
Throughout his career, Michael Epner has bridged the space between art and science. He studied engineering with a focus on digital imaging and photography. After completing an advanced degree in engineering and physics, he joined Kodak to pursue new technologies for digital image capture and enhancement. He continued to hold a passion for photography and actively participated in photographic forums with Kodak’s best and brightest.
In recent years he's delved into crowdsourcing to tap into globally distributed creative communities to produce new, original work.
Now a full time photographer, he's brought the amalgamation of these experiences into his own images. His recent photographic projects with liquid abstracts have allowed him to bring a fresh view on abstract photography and explore the genre in a unique way.
