Artist Statement
With the introduction of digital technology, a new host of tools are continuously being delivered to help us describe our surroundings: video recorders, digital cameras, cell phones, and many other hybrid devices that allow for an extreme advance in the speed and delivery of nearly inconceivable amounts of digital information. The implications of such a significant and unprecedented shift in contemporary culture are difficult to comprehend when placed within the context of the history of communication and popular culture. My work within the medium’s of photography and video address the production and consumption of this unparalleled growth of digital data in its many incarnations, exploring the limitations of the medium’s themselves and attempting to understand the impact of such a shifting terrain.
Mark Kasumovic is a Toronto based photographic and video artist. His work revolves around the inherent truth-value of the photograph and the many limitations within the medium. His latest body of work, Picture/Perfect, uses tourism as a backdrop to explore the phenomenon of digital images as data in the information age. Previous works such as “Searching for Jesus” explore the impossibility of recording faith and religious beliefs with a camera, while “Ideal Landscapes” challenges the value of traditional landscape photography by turning the natural landscape into artifice.
In 2008, Mark was selected as the Ontario winner of the BMO Art First National Competition, was credited best in show of his graduating class exhibition at Ryerson University, and received the Snap! Stars art award sponsored by TD Canada Trust. The following two years, Mark was featured in Magenta Foundation's annual publication, Flash Forward: Emerging Photographers. His recent exhibitions include a commission to
photograph the Ontario Greenbelt for Canada's largest outdoor exhibition space at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, while an ongoing body of work, titled “War Recreation”, was on display in the main Gallery of the Harbourfront Centre last spring.
He is a recent graduate of the NSCAD University Masters of Fine Arts program with an upcoming residency at the Arteles foundation in Finland. His work has recently been acquired by The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, The Beaverbrook Provincial Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Peel, along with receiving a grant from Culture Nova Scotia to continue his project, “I Can Hear You Humming”.
