Artist Statement
Through documentary photography I strive to find resolution to questions about identity and place on both a personal and political scale. I am drawn to the inherent tensions between the concepts of viewer & subject, insider & outsider and native & immigrant. Each of my photographs is an attempt to find balance between individual and environment with regards to identity and place.
Linda Maria Thompson is a photographer based in Northern Sweden.
From an early age, Linda has been surrounded by a love of photography and storytelling. She learned the basics of photography at her high school darkroom in Indiana before attending the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. There she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with an emphasis in photojournalism.
Born in Sweden, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Linda is a photographer rooted in two countries. She is passionate about creating both her own documentary photographs as well as teaching and inspiring others.
In 2003 she served as the coordinator for the inaugural year of Dokument03 an international documentary photography and film festival. Soon after, she was hired as adjunct instructor in photojournalism at Mid-Sweden University. From 2005 – 2011 she covered the happenings of Western Montana as a staff photographer at the Missoulian newspaper. Linda now divides her time between working as a photographer and guest lecturer/workshop instructor at various institutions and media outlets. Click here for CV.
Central to her photographic work and teaching philosophy is her belief in the strength of the personal visual narrative and storytelling images. Her most recent work continues to focus on concepts of home and identity and can be viewed at her blog. She also recently joined a collaborative photographic project called “Vi och dom andra” or translated, “Us and Them” which plans to exhibit during the celebration of Umeå as a european cultural capital in 2014.
