Reframing photography through abstraction I explore the world with an intuitive and poetic tone. It is a poetics through photography with which I make visceral, emotional, landscapes. Arising from questions around visual perception and its role in how we make meaning of memory and experience, my photography explores ways to create abstract landscapes with contemplative aesthetics using camera and film, without software manipulation. These photographs are both a poetic documentation of my experience and are new landscapes that elicit introspection, tranquility and mystery in the viewer.

Shifting the Frame

Shifting the Frame is a series of seascapes created through multiple exposures done in-camera, and by combining two film frames for the composition. With these works I create images that give the sense of potential from seeing the expansive horizon, the energy of waves crashing on the coast and sunlight reflecting on the water. To capture the full range of my experience of the ocean I show more than one view of the landscape at the same time. Freed of the single picture frame window of the photographic eye, I present a new landscape not only of more than one point of view, but also of what is in-between those frames of view. The black horizon line, the space in-between film frames, is where sunlight escapes past the boundary of the frame to create a wavelike cloud of light.



House of Perception

Fall 2013

A house burned by fire stands two to three feet from the edge of a dune, a dune being slowly eroded by the ocean. The decaying living room picture window looks out over the waves slowly pulling the house down. The view of the droning, enduring ocean and horizon contrasts the house. The house is like an impermanent black box, the horizon full of potential. I’ve returned to the site many times to photograph.

A continuation from Shifting the Frame, this series of photographs is a poetic interpretation, showing the essence of experience of a site on the Pacific coast. The source material is a series of 4x5" negatives shot in that living room, looking through the window onto the ocean. The images vibrate with varying densities of the copper colored negative and the ocean window images stacked atop one another pull attention into a mysterious window of rich blackness.
