Artist Statement
The basis element of transition is at the root of my photographic work. My content lies in that tenuous place between Here and There, Then and Now. Initially I used the literal form of documentary. With the birth of my children, my sense of the absolute dissolved and I expanded my vocabulary to include metaphors and similes. Each of my projects has encompassed basic stories from an ever-widening perspective. I am certain that my camera will continue to help me sort out the narrative of my life.
Process Statement
All of my images are made with color negative film. A Survey of the South of Market, San Francisco, 1979-1985, was shot with a 4”x5”view camera. Housebound,1995-2002,and Between Chaos and Grace,(ongoing) are both made with a Hasselblad. I used a 35mm Nikon for the Nicaragua project,1984-87. The People and Places photographs are all made with a Rollieflex. I print all of my work in my studio. Initially I printed with Kodak Type C materials, now I make archival pigment prints on an Epson 7900.
