Artist Statement
This group of work is of abstract and isolated fragments of youth culture. The images portray adolescent boys and girls – childlike yet on the verge of forming into the adult they will soon become.
My images are simplified and in very close detail – like a topographical index. These gelatin silver prints present an intimate view of youth through careful examination of isolated fragments of young peoples’ bodies that are childlike yet on the verge of forming into the adult they will soon become. The images depict an integral component of their identity and reveal a much larger story about the search for personal identity in a time of great transition.
I am interested in how identity is portrayed through a small but very revealing aspect of someone – the delicate exploration of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary – looking for the last strands of childhood that reside just below the surface.
Process Statement
Taken with a medium format camera, these images are toned gelatin silver prints.
