Artist Statement
In the winter of 2014 I left New York City, and with it my career, home, possessions, relationships and all attachments except
for my camera and what I could carry on my back; I became unmoored.
As I journeyed, I sought to reconnect with the life from which I had felt disconnected since I was nineteen, when my father
suddenly passed away and I moved alone across the ocean to work. My sojourning turned into a near three-year personal
odyssey. I recalled my upbringing in the organized chaos that is Tokyo. As a child,
I had spent many hours gazing from my high-rise bedroom window at the sprawling city below and found a calmness
through that frame that was elusive whenever I ventured out of the sanctuary of my room.
Now I turned once again to windows and looking out from within, where I could feel the faintly warm presence of someone
now departed from a place-- a concept known in Japan as “nukumori.” I could almost hear the toll of a distant bell, calling
to me from beyond the window like deeply buried memories trying to resurface.

Born in Tokyo, Japan 1980. Canadian/Japanese. Graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA(Honors) in History and International Relations. A fourteen-country, six-continent round-the-world solo journey in 2008 spurred his passion in photography. In 2015 Nobechi studied under renowned National Geographic photographer Sam Abell and decided to pursue photography full-time.
His series of window photographs made during almost three years spent on the road without a home: "Here.Still." (Umoored) has garnered international acclaim and was awarded the best landscape series in PDN Magazine's "The Curator" awards, Silver Prize in Best Fine Art Series in PX3 Paris Photo, and a coveted Top 50 Award in Critical Mass in 2017. In 2018 the series received a 3rd place showing in the International Photo Awards for Best Fine Art Landscapes.
Nobechi's work has been exhibited in Japan, Italy, Australia and throughout the USA and has received numerous international awards.
Highlights include solo exhibitions in 2018 at Hastings College and at the Workspace Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska, a feature by the Australian Museum of Contemporary Photography and Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography, as well as selection to curated small group exhibitions at Filter Photo Festival in Chicago and the Tokyo Institute of Photography in Japan.
Nobechi also is the founder of Nobechi Creative, producing art and photography projects and workshops in Japan.
