Artist Statement
It's been said home is where the heart is. My "home" is Canada.
One day while photographing from atop a large rock pile at the end
of Moraine Lake in Alberta's Banff National Park, I gazed upon the
beautiful scene before me, spectacular jagged mountains backlit by
the late-afternoon sun filtering through high puffy clouds, the
illuminating sun creating millions of sparkle like jewels on the lake
— the scene was simply breathtaking.
Process Statement
I work with mostly large format view cameras. I shoot with black and white film which I process and scan.
I'm a born and raised Vancouver Island lad having entered the world in1958. I began my interest in photography at around 15 years of age and after graduating from high school in 1979 I managed to land a part time job as photographer for the Goldstream Gazette, a Vancouver Island weekly newspaper located in the Western community area of Victoria, BC. From the Gazette I was offered a job as a full time staff photographer at the Brampton Daily Times in Ontario, I ended up worked there for 4 1/2 years.
The British Columbia wilderness and it's beauty came calling and I moved back west for a staff photographer's job at the Kelowna Daily Courier in October of 1983, where I am currently employed. I have managed to grab a few awards during my 30 plus years as a photojournalist, which include seven Canadian Press 'Picture of the Month' awards and the 2003 'News Picture of the Year' award for a dramatic photo from the Okanagan wildfires. A photograph of an Osprey feeding its young is also in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, donated by John Kenneth Galbraith.
