Artist Statement
Gabriel Jones composes a specific atmosphere for each photograph, initially through the choice of character, pose and architectural weight, and secondly, by the deliberate removal of any sign or reference that might identify the site of the photograph. The juxtaposition of these elements constructs a visual complexity anchored in daily reality, whilst at the same time distant from it.
Process Statement
The play between the snapshot aspect of the street photograph and the process of elaboration gives these images their strangeness, a sense of isolation, heavy urban oppression and a seductive attraction drawing on the tension between the familiar and the uncanny. A man before a collapsed pier, another stretched out in the grass, a young girl in a yellow dress in front of a brick house, a figure coming out of a wood. Are they anxious, frightened, isolated ? The question, or rather questions, rest in suspense and doubt is present in each image.
Photographer Gabriel Jones recently photographed a series of suburban landscapes in collaboration with the Grammy Award winning band, ARCADE FIRE and the designer/art director Caroline Robert and Vincent Morisset for their latest multiple-album-cover The Suburbs (which also received a Grammy award for best design Album Packaging, 2012).
In 2012 he created The Pseudonym Project (NYC). An exhibition that gathered eleven emerging and international artists such as Robert Barry, Melanie Bonajo to exhibit new work under a pseudonym. The real names of the artists where disclosed at the closing reception. He is currently preparing the Paris version for 2013.
In 2011 and 2012, Gabriel also presented a series of exhibitions in his Paris studio entitled Inside Studio E1 where he invited artists such as Roger Ballen, Raphael Dallaporta, Mathieu Mercier, Thomas Mailaender and fotry others to present their work on his walls.
Jones’ work has been part of Weekend Portfolios (curated by Chris Boot) and was selected in American Photography 27 (NYC) as well as festivals such as Noorderlicht, Voies Off Arles photography festival, FotoEspana and the Reykjavik Art Festival at the Reykjavik Art Museum. Some of his portraits where commissioned by the New York Times Magazine, Le Monde Magazine and Surface Magazine.
