Artist Statement
I work with photography as a way of expressing my faith, making portraits of people, places and things near to me. The pictures which emerge are images of a time and place in transition, of my wish to uncover something of this world and suggest another.
Process Statement
I have a traditional approach to photography, influenced by my mentor Walter Chappell and the 19th century photographers who gave me my earliest inspiration . Most of my pictures are made with an 8x10 Kodak D-2 wooden view camera, captured on sheet film and printed as gelatin silver contact prints in the darkroom using developers I make from Ansco formulas. Prints receive gold or selenium toning, and are finished by dry mounting onto Rising Museum board.
I was born in California and have lived in France, Alaska, and New Mexico. In 1997, after two years of studying photography at San Francisco City College, I moved to El Rito, New Mexico to work with the photographer Walter Chappell. He became my mentor, encouraging me to use an 8x10 view camera, and guiding me in printmaking and camerawork for the next three years. My photographs have been published in View Camera, Hayden's Ferry Review, Aperture Quarterly and Mondo 2000. I live in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
