Artist Statement
The power of nature is the predominant theme in my work. From 2003-2009, I explored concepts of human nature through surreal imagery, often using dreams as a tool not only for self-discovery, but as a window into the collective unconscious.
My latest work, entitled Cohesion, looks at how nature is responding to the human impact on the planet. Nature is not disappearing, it is transforming in response to an increasingly polluted world. The result is a surreal transformation of the nature world.
Elena Willis was born in Banbury, England, in 1979. She studied photography at Concordia University and graduated in 2003. Known for her surrealist photography, she has developed her own artistic style characterized by staged scenes unfolding within landscapes that have been significantly impacted by human activity. Her photography captures the power of nature, exploring themes such as man’s dependence on its resources as well as its ability to survive in the harshest and most polluted of living conditions. She has travelled around the world to create images that demonstrate the ongoing battle between man and nature. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia, and she has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards.
