Artist Statement
I am captivated by stories, driven by the chase for extraordinary beauty and passionate about capturing each moment with integrity and inspiration. Searching for rarely seen subjects, I’ve traveled to remote corners of the world to chronicle people and places that are truly remarkable. Depicted in their natural environments, my subjects are indigenous cultures and communities through a modern lens; scaled and selected for the most compelling visual impact.
Drew Doggett’s practice is best characterized by his ability to implement and navigate different roles of photography to create distinct images, each genuinely recognizable as his own. Between his tenure working with influential fashion and portrait photographers and his expeditions to remote regions in the Himalayas, Ethiopia and more, Drew has created an oeuvre that combines the sensitivities of multiple photographic disciplines.
Doggett’s interest in photography is primarily in chronicling remote and hard-to-reach locale; usually subjects that are at risk of eventual or sudden disappearance. He isolates certain elements in order to show us what is worth identifying, chosen for his sense of composition and aesthetics and for its transient or diminishing place in our world. His practice is of course about the resulting image, but the journey to find these exotic locations is woven into the fabric of the photograph, whether immediately or subtly apparent over time.
Doggett’s work is in private collections globally, including in the US, England, Canada, Ukraine, South Africa, Nigeria, China and Australia. His work has been shown in a number of exhibitions throughout the United States, and in 2014, the Smithsonian accepted his Omo: Expressions of a People collection into its National Museum of African Art’s photographic archives.
