Artist Statement
If I could choose just one word that would describe my approach to photography, it would be curiosity. Over and over again, I find myself asking, “how can I make an image that will describe this moment or this object.” No matter if I am in my front yard or a foreign country, no matter the equipment in hand, the question is always how can I make a picture about something, rather than of something.
Process Statement
Each of the projects that I do begins with a vague notion of gathering images into a larger composition. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Images begin to pile up. They form their own narrative and inspire more effort, seeking clarification of the theme. My working methodology is driven by the same improvisational techniques that drive jazz musicians. Listen, respond, alter, innovate, listen, practice, listen, practice.
