Artist Statement
As an artist with a background in graphic design, Doug Keyes is hyperaware of the ways in which information and images are conveyed to the public. He is equally aware of the way knowledge stacks upon itself over time, leaving an impression or collective memory. Using multiple exposure photographs to document the subliminal information we gather, Keyes’ creates a condensed photographic portrait of our collective unconscious. The resulting luminous color photographs reveal (or conceal) an entire experience in a single image.
Doug Keyes is an artist who lives and works in Seattle. For the past 25 years he has produced photographs, as well as mixed-media sculpture and art installations. Keyes’ artwork has been exhibited nationally and is in many public and private collections including the LA County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Berkeley Art Museum and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Awards include the Ned Behnke Fellowship, Photolucida’s Photographer of the Year, Jurors’ Choice Awards from the Tacoma Art Museum Biennial and CENTER - Santa Fe.
