Introduction
“But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.”
–Ephesians 5:13
Illuminare is a series that addresses the relationships artists can build through shared experience. The series developed while I studied in Italy during the summer of 2013. The light in these images for me is as much a subject in the portraits as the people. I noticed light in Italy like I never noticed it anywhere else. While travelling to various cities in Italy with my fellow artists, I realized that we all shared this formative experience. Through late night conversations we got to know each other emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. I had the honor of photographing my contemporaries, the artists I was fortunate enough to travel, rest, eat, get lost, get confused, and explore with. In an effort to bring the subjects personality into the photographs, I asked each artist to title their own portrait
