Artist Statement
I make one-of-a-kind artist’s books that combine my photography with paper engineering. Pop-up and flap books originally illustrated ideas about astronomy, fortune telling, navigation, anatomy of the body and other scientific principles. This history prompted me to construct my own books reflecting ideas on how our selves relate to society today. With pop-up books I want to eliminate the boundaries between book, installation, photography, craft and sculpture.
Colette Fu is an interdisciplinary artist who uses her vivid photographs in various forms of collage and collapsible artist books. Fu received her MFA in Fine Art Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2003 and soon after began dissecting pop-up books which is now her primary medium of artmaking. A passionate photographer and exceptionally skilled paper engineer, Fu has designed pop-ups for award winning stop motion animation commercials and has freelanced for clients Vogue China, Canon Asia and Moët Hennessy • Louis Vuitton. Her work is included in many private and rare archive collections and she has received numerous awards including Fulbright, the Independence Foundation, Sovereign Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Commission for the Arts, Constance Saltonstall Foundation, En Foco, Photographer's Forum, Nikon, the Puffin Foundation and the Society for Photographic Education. Fu has created most of her work at fully funded artist residencies such as the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, Instituto Sacatar, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Visual Studies Workshop, Institute for Electronic Arts , Vermont Studio Center and the Alden B. Dow Center for Creativity. A passionate educator, she teaches pop-up courses and community workshops with marginalized populations at various art centers, universities and institutions internationally.
