Artist Statement
Chris grew up on the south coast of England but has lived and worked in the east end of London for the last thirty years. Largely self-taught his cultural education was formed in east London in the late seventies, against a backdrop of strongly polarised political conflict and change.
His influences are shaped by memory, both personal and those of others. The east end and it’s ever increasing diaspora, with it’s tradition of radicalism, experimentation and innovation are crucial to his work. The social structure of the east end is fragmented as much as it is unified. Immigration, integration, conflict and movement are all studied via his images. A building, a pedestrian, a car, a scrapyard……a matrix of ciphers that present a running commentary.
