Culture and Place

Introduction

“If space is where culture is lived, then place is the result of that union.”

Lucy Lippard, The Lure of the Local

Culture and Place is a series of lyrical documentary images that examine place and culture in the American southwest. While the literal subject matter is rural and urban topographic spaces, the images are about the different ways that culture and place are linked, and suggest what form can say about ourselves, how we organize, and how we interact.

By using formal elements like line, shape, texture, and color as well as narrative elements as visual cues, this work takes a formal view of the vernacular to reveal narratives about transition in place, the personal in place, and how landscape can become place. This series also suggests that the dominant view of place wedded in rural settings is actually a special case and that a broader domain that includes suburban and urban areas is more appropriate.

My interest in this topic stems from seeing images of family at the Visalia Migrant Labor Camp in Tulare California taken by FSA photographers Russell Lee and Arthur Rothstein in the early 1940s. These images suggest that my own sense of place is part of a larger body of stories told in history books and depicted in countless works of fiction and film.

New Mexico WPA Sites

Introduction

This is a documentary survey project of buildings and other structures that were either built or refurbished and restored by funding provided by the Work Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was formed in 1935 and was an important part of The New Deal of President Franklin Roosevelt.

There are over 15 thousand WPA sites in the United States, over 300 in New Mexico, and many still function in their intended purpose. These included schools, office buildings, bridges, parks, and murals.

Before its dismantling in 1943, the WPA employed more than 8.5 million workers who worked on 1.4 million projects.

These images were taken in 2019.

Stonefridge

Introduction

Created in the 1990s by conceptual artist Adam Horowitz, Stonefridge was located next to the Santa Fe Transfer Station. It was removed in 2007.

These images were taken in January of 2006.

The Vanishing Middle Class

Introduction

This series examines the decline of rural communities that has occurred in many parts of the United States. Many economists, sociologists, political scientists have long suggested the existence of a second America, and a recent book by MIT economist Peter Temin (The Vanishing Middle Class: Prejudice and Power in a Dual Economy) argues that the middle class is vanishing and America is becoming more of a developing country instead of a developed country.

Using images taken in the state of New Mexico, this series of images suggest narratives of change, decline, and abandonment. Looking at this phenomenon at a higher level, somewhat akin to a windshield survey, these images are depictive and observational, and do not attempt to answer why this transformation of the American middle class into two groups has taken place.

Instead, these images document place and provide a glimpse into the surface of an emerging second world where workers earn lower wages, are saddled with debt, and if they are employed, work in industries that offer little of the job security afforded workers in the financial and high technology sectors that account for an increasing share of the benefits of economic growth in an increasingly globalized and technology-driven world.

Statements

Artist Statement
My images span a broad range of interests ranging from travel and street to landscape photography and many are motivated by an interest in social topographies and how these can be depicted visually.

Process Statement
Images are taken with a variety of cameras (from point and shoot to large format) utilizing both film and digital methods. Recent work is largely digital and much of this work is being done with tilt-shift lenses.

Biography

Santa Fe New Mexico based photographer Brian K. Edwards specializes in fine art photography and photographic print making for the fine art connoisseur and collector. He has photographed extensively in the southwest, but also across the United States and internationally. His work ranges from more traditional landscapes to urban street settings to architecture and much his work combines landscape with architectural subjects. His work has been published in The Hand Magazine and Landscape Magazine and has been exhibited in numerous galleries, including the Marion Center, and the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Southeast Center for Photography in Greenville, South Carolina, and the Soho Photo Gallery in New York City. His work has also appeared in numerous online venues include Don’t Take Pictures, Feature Shoot, and Fraction Magazine. He received an MFA in Photography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
