What We Leave Behind
Introduction
The notion of human presence, and our impact – or imposition on our environment runs throughout my career as an artist. I am interested in what we leave behind. This defines us as a species, and illustrates how we continue to discover new ways to improve our lives - often while looking at something else. Positive and profound change comes when groups of people work together to implement a common vision. My mission as an artist is to communicate these ideas in a visually interesting way and affect as large an audience as possible.
In the project "Private Places" I draw attention to people’s living spaces by photographing gardens and how we adorn our immediate surrounding. These small intimate gardens have bits and pieces of the people who own them: found objects that are dear to them, keepsakes, statues and personal items that reveal the people behind them. In the project "Relics", I am raising questions about our impermanence and what remains. By taking these forms out of context, they demonstrate the similarities among humans revealing our ingenuity and folly by observing the detritus we leave behind. These forms become monumental earth works in their own right. Most recently, in "Rooftop" I addresses what some contemporary urban pioneers are doing to mitigate the consequences of non-renewable energy consumption – by countering heat island effect, improving storm water control, and reducing our carbon footprint. In these photographs, I draw attention to the positive effects of living architecture on global warming. Busy skylines, symbols of our growth (at the expense of natural resources), are juxtaposed in contrast with buildings covered in plantings. These elevated landscapes represent the judicious reintroduction of nature, flourishing in a new urban setting while supporting the argument of tending our own garden.
