Born in California in 1975, Brad Farwell studied architecture at Yale University as an undergraduate. This analytical and typological approach to the space around us informed much of his early work, and the role of the camera as a mediator between vision and physical reality continues to be an important subject in his art. He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006, and has been working and teaching in Chicago and New York since then.
His photographs have been published in McSweeneys Quarterly, Etiqueta Negra, and Paper Monument, and were featured in The Collector’s Guide to New Art Photography Vol 2. His work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (as part of John Cage's Musicircus), The American Academy in Rome, at the Jones Center for Contemporary Art (as part of New American Talent 22), and the Neue Kunst Galerie in Leipzig (in their Salon für Kunstbuch) among others. His writing was included in the collection _Draw it with your eyes closed: The art of the art assignment_.
He was a recipient of a CAAP grant from the Chicago Cultural Affairs, and was awarded a studio residency by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council for the summer of 2011.
Brad currently teaches at the International Center of Photography and the Fashion Institute of Technology. He lives in Brooklyn with his brilliant wife and their two mischievous children.
