Artist Statement
Between photography and cinematography there is a certain commonality. My photographs explore the hazy boundaries that exist between the two. By borrowing methodology from filmmaking, my images are a re-imagining and re-construction of movie sets that I have worked on, during my career as an Assistant Cameraman. With movies there is a willing suspension of disbelief. With the photograph there has always been an expectation of honesty. Though here is a photograph that could be either. By playing upon the viewers expectations, I can bring those very expectations into question. Process Statement
The creation of each photograph begins with the construction of a set, in miniature. As with filmmaking, all staging and lighting is done looking through the lens. Once photographed, the diorama is destroyed. Like a film set, each is a temporal object that only exists as an image.

 

 

Bill Finger is a Seattle based artist whose work often draws from his past as an Assistant Cameraman in the Film Industry. The work centers around the construction and photographing of miniature “sets.” His images can be found in the permanent collections of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the George Eastman Museum of Photography in Rochester, NY.
