Artist Statement
My work questions the nature of photographic representation through its own process and meaning. Grounded in an obsession to capture the ‘reality’, I use standard documentary methods to photograph and analog methods to print and all the while working to eliminate judgment, imposed ideas, and preconceived meanings. Opposite to the recent trend of digital photography, I use these traditional methods and make simplistic photographs – yet often appear as though they were unreal or digitized.
Process Statement
In the ‘Playing Cards’ series, I photographed the backsides of playing cards, inevitably drawing attentions to the nuances of the card patterns. Since the other side of the playing card can never be viewed, these images exemplify the impossibility of seeking further information in photographs, other than what is already visible. Some popular legends maintain that the mysterious designs of playing cards have religious, astrological or metaphysical significance while others claim these interpretations are jokes made to conceal the true intention of gambling. In the most straightforward way, these images of playing cards also attempt to turn the interpretation of meaning in photographs into a joke.
