Artist Statement
Shrine’ is an ongoing project researching and recording pilgrimage sites, both religious and secular around the world, to record and communicate what pilgrimage means in 21st Century society. This project originated from the belief that everyone has a place or location that is significant to them as an individual. Pilgrims are drawn from all backgrounds and come together to share their love and devotion for any given icon which is manifested in the shrine. These shrines act as a conduit for pilgrims coming to pay their respects and outpour their emotions. In essence, ‘Shrine’ is a practice based exploration into the re-presentation of devotional iconography through the photographic medium.
Process Statement
Shrines fluctuate in size and texture over indeterminate periods of time, and photography is the perfect methodology, not only for recording a peak in any given shrine’s existence, but also to document these fluctuations and the various artifacts that are left and displaced on and from the shrine. Photographically documenting with a large format 5x4 camera has the capabilities to record intricate details present at the shrines, and the ability to replicate that on a large scale for exhibition and print purposes.
