Gehry's Children

Introduction

Gehry’s Children is a series I completed while on location in Seattle. I have always been fascinated by the materiality of Frank Gehry's buildings. This series of photos deconstructs his EMP Museum in Seattle into component shapes and textures. It is a study in form, color, and texture captured through fine art architectural photography. Gehry's Children received a silver medal at the 2014 Prix de la Photographie, Paris and Honorable Mention in Photography at the 2013 London International Creative Competition - Gehry's Children

Niemeyer's Brasilia

Introduction

Niemeyer’s Brasilia is a series conceived when I was visiting Brasilia for the first time in 2012. I was fascinated by Brasilia, which seemed futuristic and trapped in time. The entire city was shaped by the works of architect Oscar Niemeyer, whose presence is felt in every corner of the city, from the spectacular Cathedral of Brasilia to the more intimate chapels and monuments. Niemeyer had unprecedented influence over the design of the city from its beginnings until his death in 2012, a span that lasted over 50 years. There is no other place in the world where one architect had so much influence, which explains my fascination with his buildings.

Niemeyer's Brasilia was a 2nd place category winner at the 2013 IPA Awards and also won 1st Place/People's Choice at the 2014 Prix de la Photographie, Paris. The series has since been published in newspapers and magazines around the world in 12 countries and 8 languages.

These photographs were included in the solo exhibition "Brazil: Night & Day - Photographs by Andrew Prokos" at Banco do Brasil New York, and at the Consulate General of Brazil in New York. - Niemeyer's Brasilia

Dunescapes

Introduction

Dunescapes is a series of monochrome landscapes of the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi. Bordering Saudi Arabia, this vast area is more famously known as The Empty Quarter, or Rub' al Khali in Arabic, and contains some of the highest dunes in the world. Liwa is a magical place, not only for the color of the sand and the sheer size of the dunes, but because of the interplay of light on the dunes as the day progresses.

Inverted

Introduction

Inverted is an experimental photography series inspired by the modernist and futuristic architecture of the Middle East. Through the use of negative imagery, the series portrays an architectural wonderland of bold color fields, abstraction, and close-up views which give us just a glimpse of the inhabitants’ lives.

Statements

Artist Statement
I am often asked how I would classify my work as a photographer. I could answer that in any number of ways, but what holds greater significance to me are the emotions I intend to convey through my work. These emotions represent my sentiment while I'm in the field capturing an image, and I convey them to the viewer. The feeling of awe and astonishment evoked by a sweeping landscape or a complex inhabited urban view. The sensation of elation elicited by observing masses of people in motion. The feeling of being bathed in the glow of city lights captured against the dark of night. These are my hallmark, and my preoccupation as a fine art photographer. They are the emotions that tie my work together, and what I return to time and time again.

Biography

Andrew's color and black and white fine art photographs incorporate architectural elements and sweeping landscapes and urban views. His large-scale cityscapes of New York, London, Washington DC, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Rio de Janeiro are often presented as fine art panoramas which capture the city in intricate detail. Andrew often uses long exposure photography techniques by day and at night to "collect" light, which imparts a sense of movement and suffuses his scenes with light. The resulting photographs are both highly detailed and lyrical in quality.

Andrew’s photography has been widely published in magazines and newspapers, and has been awarded at the Prix de la Photographie (Px3), the International Photography Awards, the Epson International Pano Awards and others. His photography has been exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York, 21_21 Design Sight Museum in Tokyo, Palm Springs Art Museum Modernism Week, Bando do Brasil , and in galleries and fine art collections in the USA and Europe.
