Color of Scars

Introduction

The Arab Spring revolution held the key to a brighter future. The truth is however that for most this has not happened. Despite the promises the economic burden has increased for most and reverberations from the events can still be felt all around disrupting the tranquility of the region every so often exasperating an already delicate balance of life. What promised to be the beginning of a new life is slowly eroding into a bleak and uncertain road. I fell in love with images that I unsuspectingly saw floating between layers of reality. A world of colour that to me was as intoxicating and captivating as it was woeful and tragic. The revolutions brought on new roles and new identities to different people. People and landscapes took on new meanings and a new preponderance in the eyes of the world. Every gathering, every face and every gesture however innocent carried with it the scars of revolution and war. As events were churning all around me I saw ordinary people in battle between trying to maintain a normalcy of life and at the same time fight for a better future. I sought out these places in order to colour the inner soul of a changing world.

Introduction

This project about my homeland began as a search for my identity and was as much a photography project as it was a journey of reconciliation. This is an attempt to understand my roots in a country where I sometimes feel close to and at others alienated from. Unable to move forward and clinging to its past as a reassurance that nothing cannot be undone, despite the island's division since '74, intemporality is a way of life in Cyprus.

Cyprus has been a divided country since 1974 after the Turkish invasion. Greek Cypriots live on the South of the island and Turkish Cypriots live in the occupied North. The two, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots were formally the only two legitimate populations on the island. Turkish immigrants however have since emigrated to the North changing the island's demographics. A small number of surviving Greek enclave still reside on the Northeastern tip of the island. The border between the two sides was opened in 2003 and many have made the passage to the 'other' side. In 2004 Cyprus became a member state of the European Union. The North is not recognised by the EU so it is de jure part of the Republic of Cyprus and the EU even though it is not in either's control. It is only recognised by Turkey.

Biography

Alexandros Demetriades was born in 1967 in Nicosia, Cyprus. In 1984, Alexandros moved with his family to the U.S. He later completed a BA in Business and Economics, and an MBA in Finance and Investments at George Washington University in Washington D.C. In 1996, he formed a cross-disciplinary design firm, where he acted as Creative Director. In 2009, Alexandros studied cinematography at New York University. Upon graduating, he returned to Cyprus to commit to photography professionally. In Cyprus, he embarked on a personal photographic journey documenting his homeland for two years (2010-11). In the meantime, he also traveled to the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa covering both newsworthy events but also personal projects. Alexandros Demetriades's second long term project "The Color of Scars" is an ongoing project that deals with life during and after the Arab Spring revolutions.

Alexandros has received numerous awards, including from B&W Magazine, International Photography Awards, Photo Annual Awards and Sigma Annual Photography; in 2012, he was nominated from the Terry O'Neil Award. In 2013 he was a finalist at the ONWARD Compé awards, won a Gold and Silver at the San Francisco International Awards, and Gold and Bronze at Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3) amongst others. His work has been published in the International Herald Tribune, New York Times Lens Blog, Leica Fotografie International, B&W magazine, Vervephoto: a new breed of documentary photographers, amongst others.
